Which Queen is She?

'She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes.
And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies.
And she only reveals what she wants you to see.
She hides like a child, but she's always a woman to me.

She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you.
She can ask for the truth, but she'll never believe you.
And she'll take what you'll give her as long as it's free.
Yeah, she steals like a thief, but she's always a woman to me.

Oh, she takes care of herself,
She can wait if she wants,
She's ahead of her time.
Oh, and she never gives out,
And she never gives in.
She just changes her mind.

And she'll promise you more than the Garden of Eden.
Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding.
But she'll bring out the best and the worst you can be.
Blame it all on yourself, 'cause she's always a woman to me.

She is frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel.
But she can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool.
And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree.
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you,
But she's always a woman to me.'

~Billy Joel, 'Always a Woman to Me'

The Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords, various decks
The Queen of Swords is my significator, and I love her for the strong, powerful, willful and independent woman she is. She is not easy to understand. She is not easy to live with. She is no victim--and she's no victimizer. She just IS, and if you don't like the way she is, that's fine with her. Not her problem.

She's a thin band of indestructible steel in the soft body of a woman. The Queen of Swords.

  1. I liked this post! ;-)
You are a Queen of Swords? I must say I am a bit afraid of you then, even though you inspire me!

I love the Queen of the Swords in the Hudes Tarot (I see she's there in your picture), because of the way she's looking at the sword. As if wondering 'should I use it or not!?'. Or 'where will it hurt most?'. Or maybe she's a surgeon, thinking 'how can I remove this tumor in a way that will hasten healing?'.

And the Queen of the Druidcraft? Totally comfortable with the bitter cold winter wind. In her element. She needs no protection!

This Queen is indeed an interesting character...

  2. Nice observations on those queens, Marina! Were you familiar with the Billy Joel song? It's always been one of my favourites. My husband doesn't get the song, he thinks it's criticising. He says she sounds like a bitch. Now, where have I heard that before...

  4. You know I was in denial about my Queen of Swords nature for a long time, insisting I was Queen of Pentacles because I like going for walks and exercising and eating a vegetarian diet. But...I'm not really materialistic, certainly not maternal! I do have insight into things that gives the the ability to cut through the crap and help people see their lives from a different (objective?) perspective, and tarot is a major tool in that. BUT, I am very caustic in my opinions and don't mince words--in fact in just about every way you can describe her, I'm Queen of Swords. I've embraced it!

  6. Yep, I'd guessed Queen of Swords before I clicked through :) I associate with her, too. Come and check out the Steampunk version tomorrow, it's a riot.

I think my favourite QoS is the Gaian - the wiser, more spiritual side of this lady. My least favourite would be the Thoth. Yeah, yeah, the bloody head is a symbol, but just ugh!

    Lovely post, Carla :)
