One Deck Wonder: 6 of Wands

Thoth Tarot
Today's card from the Thoth Tarot  is 6 of Wands. This is a very pretty card, with its regal purple background and 6 crossed wands. At each intersection point, a flame rises, because the Wands suit is the suit of Fire--will, intention, action. Two of the wands are topped with winged orbs, two with phoenix heads and two with lotus blossoms. These are apparently traditional tools of various levels of adepts in the Golden Dawn tradition. No matter, we can see symbolism in them without knowing anything about Golden Dawn. At the top of the card is the symbol for Jupiter, bottom Leo--Jupiter in Leo, as DuQuette remarks in Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot, it's 'a recipe for Victory.'

I suppose I can take this as a sign of good day, then! I have an appointment this afternoon to have my hearing reassessed and get some new hearing aids programmed. Happy about that. My old hearing aids, one of them stopped working a couple of years ago and I haven't bothered to have them seen to, but my tinnitus bothers me a lot and as it's been four years since I got these aids, it turns out they're obsolete anyway. I went to see the audiologist last Friday and she gave me some reassurances. I told her my fears and worries about my hearing. My tinnitus is quite loud and bothers me often. I asked about therapy for dealing with this, but she said there is nothing in my area. I quote, 'The Midlands is a bad place to have tinnitus.' Apparently, once again, only southern people deserve treatment for an ailment, while the rest of us up north just have to self-medicate with chips and lager and Lotto tickets. (I am slightly bitter). However, she did offer comfort, because I mentioned that I get anxiety during a bout with my tinnitus that I will one day go stone deaf and the tinnitus will be the only thing I can hear at all. I know that this is a possibility, and it is the experience of some people. She looked at my chart and said that the pattern of my hearing loss did not suggest that I would ever be completely deaf, unless something catastrophic like an accident were to happen, and that as long as I have any hearing left at all, they will be able to help me with hearing aids. She also reminded me that all people's hearing begins to deteriorate from age 21, and I know that 1 in 6 people have a noticeable hearing loss, though many never seek help. She also reminded me that just as a person does not go completely blind because they have glasses, people don't automatically go completely deaf because they have hearing aids.

I don't know why there is such a stigma about hearing loss. People laughingly admit to not being able to see without their glasses, make all kinds of jokes about their vision going as part of aging, then they make earnest, concerned faces and cluck sympathetically at you when you say you have a hearing loss and could they speak up. It makes me want to hurl something at them.

I think more people with a hearing difficulty should get hearing aids, and they should become as much a fashion accessory as eyeglasses. Why not?? Why not??? Bling them out, put fat honking rhinestones on them, to hell with all this, 'They're so discreet no one will ever know you're wearing them.' Screw that! They need to know I'm wearing them! They need to know I've got a hearing loss and they should speak the hell up!

Okay, I feel better now.

The 6 of Wands, it comes to mind, has intimations of being victorious in battle. So maybe I'm feeling a bit frisky today, ready to stand up for ... everything! I have to be careful when I'm in 'fight my corner' mode. I can be less than circumspect. ;)

  1. I don't know a lot about the Thoth but the seems to me that two of the Wands are topped with the Winged Sun of the Egyptians, the other two with the Anubis head and the last two, yes, with Lotuses. Just an impression. :D

They loved to make reference to Egyptian things in the early XX century, it seems. I have an old Playing Card deck from that times that is called 'Ramses' even though I is just a common poker deck with keywords, so you can use it for divination.

I'm sure that Crowley being the big show-off he was wouldn't resist and opportunity to put some Egyptian delight in his deck. :p

I really, really with you good luck with your treatment. My grandfather lost his hearing in the army, when they fired a cannon and he was too close to it. The explosion damaged his hearing and he needed hearing aids for the rest of his life.

That said, it took YEARS for his hearing to become really bad. and it was much worsened by diabetes. So if you don't have any condition, I'm sure there no reason why would would go completely deaf - just keep visiting the doctor and taking care of yourself. :)

"...self-medicate with chips and lager and Lotto tickets" - Best Line Ever!

    1. I thought that too about the wands, but in the DuQuette book he says it's a phoenix, so I thought he might know better than me. I like Anubis better, though!

Crowley loved to dress up like an Egyptian. I'm reading a biography of him, oh my god! I will post some some stuff from it when I've had time to process it. :)

I'm sure I'll be talking a lot about the hearing aids. ;)

    2. Erm... if Crowley himself was really into Egyptian garb why the hell DuQuette assumes the wand has a phoenix on it!?!?!!? One would think the deck would follow its creator's fancy...

Nevertheless, being Thoth illiterate that I am, honestly I wouldn't dare to question the book of a well-known Thoth specialist... maybe I oughta keep me gob shut for good!

They say that Crowley's biography either makes you want to convert to his religion or gives you nightmare at night. Are you feeling any of this? Well, I know you are good keeping your head above the superstition, lol!

    3. I don't know, I myself think it looks like an ibis. DuQuette doesn't get it right every time. He says as much in his intro to the book. So let's just go with what WE think it is. That's what readers do anyway, isn't it? :) You know what, Thoth himself had the head of an ibis. I think it's Thoth!

    4. But then he's got ears like a jackal. Maybe he's both. Maybe Lady Frieda Harris was high. Apparently these high magic folk liked to do drugs (which were all legal back then), so who knows!

    1. The NHS gives free hearing aids, I'd say that's a pretty darn good service. Don't joke about your dad's hearing, he can't help it. Don't make a big deal of it, though. And if he ever says anything about hearing aids, encourage him and do not make fun of him! :) x

  3. I'm still stuck on the fact you went several years without updating a hearing aid that had stopped working!

I wonder whether the difference between glasses and hearing aids is due to the fact that you just couldn't hide glasses for the longest while, and hearing aids only became feasible more recently. In any case, as you say, I don't think there's much difference in having one trouble or the other, both can be awful to live with.

Good luck with the new hearing aids *crosses fingers*

    1. You know, I think that was the old thing...if I don't admit something's wrong, if I don't go and ask about it...then it's not really happening. If I don't go to the doctor, I won't find out I have cancer, and if I don't know I've got it, I won't really have it. Only in this case--if I don't do anything about my hearing, I won't really have a hearing loss. I'm doing fine, so I'm fine.

Dealing with the HAs, going to the audiologist, and even just thinking about these things all make me feel anxious and distressed. That's no fun.

    2. Reading this makes me realise I've been doing a bit of this with some of Big Boy's issues. Trying to be more proactive...
